“Take 7 minutes and call me in the morning: Hamilton doctor lauds audio stress treatment”

The free seven-minute listening program is recommended to patients of Dr. Richard Tytus, a Hamilton family physician who also teaches at McMaster University.

"I give them a prescription, suggest they use it twice a day and combine it with exercising and eating right," said Tytus. "It's part of a whole package, and a lifestyle change."

Hamilton family physician, Mac prof, launches app to help patients with stress-related illness.

Starting today, the 88% of 18-to-24-year-old Canadians who experience uncomfortable levels of stress will be prescribed a new app for iPhone® and Android® by downtown Hamilton family physician, Dr. Richard Tytus. The free app, named Cure Stress (, contains guided audio programs that lead the listener through a unique meditative exercise.

"60-80% of issues presented to family doctors are stress related. Cure Stress acts as a tool for physicians to help patients deal with these issues," says Dr. Tytus, who also trains incoming family physicians at McMaster University. "Patients regularly tell me how their relationships with family and co-workers are improving. One woman credited the exercise with helping her quit after 35 years of smoking."

Cure Stress app highlights

  • Quick seven-minute audio guides the listener through the unique technique
  • Access to longer instructional audio (up to 60 min. in length) available
  • Endorsed by healthcare professionals and used since 1960

Cure Stress is available on the App Store and Google Play for free. Additional audio programs are available for purchase within the app with all proceeds supporting the nonprofit organization, Foundation of Human Understanding. Cure Stress is designed for iPhone and Android phones.

The American Academy of Family Physicians conducted a study in 1988 that discovered that 75% to 90% of patient visits to their family physician are for stress-related complaints. Stress manifests itself in so many different ways. Stress can present itself as depression and anxiety; it can cause or worsen high blood pressure, cholesterol, insomnia… There are many health issues that are related to stress, but the question is, how do you deal with stress?

On Tuesday Oct. 1, 2013, come join me at a public lecture about how to deal with stress at McMaster University. Tickets are $10 and the event is almost sold out. To learn more and to register, visit
